MURRAY — The Murray Mustangs methodically marched to an 8-1 victory with 14 hits in knocking off East Union here Wednesday in Class 1A regional quarterfinal play.

The Mustangs (25-6) play at home again Friday in a 7 p.m. matchup with Corning of the Pride of Iowa Conference, an 11-7 victor over Lenox Wednesday. Corning, improved in the second half of the season, is 14-14.

East Union bows out at 9-14, scoring only on an RBI hit by Kelsey Hoff in the fifth inning Wednesday. Danielle Riley took the loss, yielding four earned runs with three strikeouts and no walks.

Kate Patton picked up the win, scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

“Kate was very good,” Murray coach Danny Jensen. “She worked out of a jam in the third, when they had runners on second and third with no outs. She got a popup, strikeout and groundout to shortstop.”

Murray’s offense included a pair of home runs. Danielle McIntosh hit her eighth home run of the year in addition to a double and single. Chellsea Jones hit her first homer of the season along with a double for three RBI.

Megan Oswald also had three hits, and Deena Snyder knocked in a run while hitting a double and single.

“We just kept chipping away,” Jensen said. “The two home runs helped. McIntosh also had a big night in the field with three assists and two putouts. The only time they got her out, she hit a deep flyout to the left field fence. Our three-through-seven hitters were big for us tonight.”

Brittany Malone, Chay Blondowski and Riley each had two hits for East Union. Courtesy runner Kacie Ripperger had three stolen bases. Shortstop Kaeleigh Ballentine and third baseman Rochelle Means were seniors in East Union’s lineup Wednesday.

Jensen said he has a lot to learn about Corning before Friday’s 7 p.m. matchup.

“We have not seen them play,” Jensen said. “They play in a tough league. They’ve played some close games with some of the same opponents. I hear their pitcher has a drop ball and stays around the plate. I’m sure they can play.”
