Maxine Kean – West Des Moines

Maxine Smith Kean, 93, of West Des Moines, formerly of Blockton, died July 8, 2013, at Mount Ayr Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. The Rev. Scott Marcum will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blockton. Open visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to HCI Care Services in Mount Ayr. Maxine Smith Kean, daughter of Bertha (Jennings) and Samuel Jesse Smith, was born Jan. 24, 1920, on the family farm near Blockton.

Maxine graduated from Blockton High School. Maxine furthered her education at Northwest Missouri State Teacher’s College, and eventually earned her master’s degree in education from Drake University.

Maxine taught elementary grades in Des Moines public schools for 36 years, retiring in 1983.

Maxine married Daniel J. Kean.

Maxine was a member of the West Des Moines Christian Church, Polk County Historical Society, American Association of University Women, West Des Moines Book Review Club, West Des Moines Women’s Club, Toastmasters, Retired Teachers Association and was on the program committee for West Des Moines AARP.

Maxine is survived by her brother Paul J. (Frances) Smith of Mount Ayr; niece Marcia (Gary) Allen of Corning; nephew Kenneth (Linda) Smith of Independence, Mo.; great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1985; sister Gayle Hilt; brother-in-law Edward Hilt; and niece Paula Lynette Smith.
