County fairs are in full swing or about to be

The first of the area county fairs is off and running in Ringgold County this week.

The next three weeks you have a chance to attend fairs in every county around the area.

Fair queens, livestock and plenty of great food will be on hand at the fairs. I’ll even be flipping pancakes at the Union County Fair on July 25 if you want to come out for a free breakfast.

It is always a fun week for all the 4-H and FFA kids. I just hope the temperature outside stays in the 80s or a little less.

State fair

I see advanced tickets for the Iowa State Fair are on sale now at several local locations. The grocery stores have discounted tickets available for purchase. You can buy them now for $8 versus the $11 price you would be charged at the gate. So, buy early and save yourself a few bucks.

The state fair will have a couple of the Creston Party in the Park bands with Sydney Lett and the Rumbley Brothers taking to a couple of the state fair stages.

As of Monday, you will be able to get your Twinkie fix going again.

The cream-filled treat will reappear in stores after being gone for several months.

They will come back with an even longer shelf life. Before they disappeared they had a 26-day shelf life, now they will have a 45-day shelf life. Although, I have seen people eat the treats that have been around much longer than that!

The treats will also be available in gluten-free and several other variations.

McKinley Park

The McKinley Park Festival is planned for Saturday, July 27.

The festival will be condensed to make it easier on everyone. The events will take place starting at 3:30 in the afternoon. In addition to the kids fishing contest, there will be a skateboard contest at the skateboard arena. The Bill Riley talent contest, a fun item auction and kids movie will be just part of the fun for the evening.

A full listing of all the events will be in the newspaper in the coming weeks.

It’s a great way to have some fun and help donate a little money for the park.

I read Iowa is No. 13 in per capita beer consumption in the United States.

Iowans over 21 drink an average of 33.6 gallons per year.

North Dakota is number one by a long ways with the folks up north putting down almost 46 gallons per year.

It looks like the folks on the east coast consume the least amount of beer as a region and the folks in the Midwest have a taste for the brew.

I would guess the folks back east are more wine drinkers.

I thought we just got done with elections, but now I see we have all kinds of people announcing they want to run for governor, president or a number of other offices.

Politics must be a pretty good business to be in, because it sure seems like somebody is always seeking an office somewhere!

I want to say a big Thank You to the Creston Shooters for another wonderful Fourth of July display at McKinley Park.

I think the Thursday holiday kept a lot of people around the area. The numbers of folks at the parade and around town watching the fireworks show looked like it may have been a record.

Thought for the week: Common sense consists in not letting oneself be dazzled by a sentiment or an idea, however excellent they may be, to the point of losing sight of everything else. — Andre Gide
