Paul Mitchell, 93, of Corning died July 10, 2013, at Alegent Creighton Health Mercy Hospital in Corning.
Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 701 Seventh St., Corning. The Rev. Lowell Schaaf will officiate. Interment will be in Prairie Rose Cemetery in Adams County. Open visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Friday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Paul LaVern Mitchell, son of Ruth (Lawrence) and Lee Mitchell, was born March 22, 1920, in Adams County near Brooks.
Paul graduated from Corning High School in 1938 and moved West to find work during the Great Depression.
On May 28, 1942, Paul married Osil Bernadine Steadman in Reno, Nev.
Paul worked for the Boeing Corporation in Seattle, Wash., and then at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, Calif. Paul returned to Iowa in January 1943 and was drafted into the Army Air Force a short time later. Paul was stationed in numerous locations throughout the United States and overseas in Cairo, Egypt. Paul was honorably discharged from Fort Sheridan, Chicago, in March 1946.
Paul and Osil farmed upon Paul’s military discharge.
The couple were members of Maple Grove Methodist Church in Guss and spent many years as a Methodist Youth Fellowship leaders.
In 1959, Paul and Osil bought and moved to their farm located near Iveyville.
In 2008, Paul and Osil moved to Corning.
Osil died Dec. 11, 2009.
Paul was a long-time 4-H Leader in Taylor County.
Paul is survived by his son Stephen (wife Jennifer) Mitchell of Arvada, Colo.; daughter-in-law Norma of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Michele Grabowsky of Omaha, Neb., and Dr. Cassidy (wife Melanie) Mitchell of Lincoln, Neb.; great-grandchildren, Jamie Gruhn, Ashley Scariano and Rowen, Chase and Logan Mitchell of Lincoln, Neb.; great-great-grandchildren, Lexie and Lyric Gruhn and Joey Scariano; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Paul was preceded in death by his parents; brother Alvin Mitchell and son Douglas Mitchell in 2010.
