AFTON — Area residents are invited to enter canned goods and/or frozen jams, jellies or spreads in the canned good department competition at Union County Fair.

Items entered may not have received any ribbons in earlier years’ judging. All entries should be in standard jars with lids and rings (except for the frozen items). Paraffin should not be used on jams and jellies.

Entries will be accepted Sunday after the parade (7 to 8 p.m.) or 8 to 11 a.m. Monday morning at Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. Entry fee is 50 cents per item.

Premiums will be paid for blue – $1.25, red – $1 and white – 75 cents. There will be a sweepstakes award for the person receiving the most blue ribbons. There will also be a sweepstakes award for the junior category, age 16 and younger. A special category for men who do canning is also a feature.

Judging of the canned goods and frozen jams, jellies and spreads will be 1 p.m. Monday and is open to anyone wanting to attend. All entries will be released 2 to 4 p.m. July 25.

On July 24, the canned goods department will host a “sweet treat and salsa” tasting party 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the 4-H commercial building.

For more information, contact Betty Wallace at 782-2677 or Iris Smith at 782-5992.

Fair books are available at Union County Extension in Creston or Creston Chamber of Commerce; the canned goods information can be found on pages 61-65. The fair book is available online at ucfair.com.
