Walter Putney Sr., 81, of Kellerton died July 13, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minn.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. The Rev. Bill Armstrong will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, southeast of Mount Ayr. Open visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Saturday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Walter Putney Sr., son of Mildred Kathleen (Mosier) and Olie Walter Putney, was born Aug. 12, 1931, at home in Poe Township, Kellerton.
After growing up on the farm, Walt drove a coal truck in Des Moines and later moved to Omaha, Neb., where he hauled equipment.
Walt returned to Des Moines and was a house mover.
In the early 1950s, Walt married Norma. They later divorced.
While living in Des Moines, Walt worked as a hide trimmer and worked at Firestone Tire Company.
On April 10, 1966, Walt married Violet Sandra Sams.
In 1969, the family moved to northeastern Minnesota, where Walt worked at U.S. Steel and the family settled in the Gheen, Minn., area.
Walt retired from U.S. Steel in 1987 and returned to the home farm to live the remainder of his life.
Walt was an active member of A.A.
Walt is survived by his children, Steve of Cannon Falls, Minn., Walter Jr. of Kellerton, George (Melissa) of Des Moines, Christina of Fort Dodge, Naomi of Fulton, Mo., and Dixie (Jake) of Virginia, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and daughter-in-law Jolene of Cook, Minn.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents; wife Violet; son Leo; sisters, Barb Weaver and Margaret Putney; and brother Johnny.
