Coach dies

SHENANDOAH — Shenandoah volleyball coach Chad Van Houten was killed in an auto accident Tuesday afternoon near Shenandoah.

The Iowa State Patrol said Van Houten, 45, of rural Shenandoah was one of the drivers in a two-vehicle collision at about 2:30 p.m. four miles east of Shenandoah on 190th Street.

A graduate of Fremont-Mills High School, Van Houten coached at Shenandoah for more than five years. According to the Iowa State Patrol report, Van Houten was driving west in a 2003 Dodge Intrepid and Gary Wise of Clarinda was driving east in a 2006 GMC Sierra pickup. The vehicles collided at the crest of a hill.

Wise, 64, was taken to the Shenandoah Medical Center. Van Houten, who also coached middle school basketball, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Final Class 3A and 4A state baseball ratings were announced Tuesday.
