ST. MARYS — Orient-Macksburg scored three runs in the seventh inning to win a back-and-forth contest 8-7 here Tuesday against Lamoni in a Class 1A district quarterfinal.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 10-13 for the season, and they now move on to play the defending state champions and eighth-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys here tonight.
The Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Lamoni tied things up in the third inning, before taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
Orient-Macksburg responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 3-2 after four.
Sophomore Jordan Thompson handled the pitching duties through that point in the game, giving up two runs on one hit with four walks and four strikeouts.
He gave way to junior Chantz Davidson, who ran into trouble in the fifth inning, surrendering five runs on six hits with one walk. Only two of the runs were earned.

The Bulldogs got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning and pushed another across in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Trailing 7-5 heading into the seventh, the Bulldogs got three runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull out the 8-7 win.
Caviness pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the Bulldogs, giving up no runs on no hits and no walks, while striking out four.
Thompson finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and two runs batted in to lead the way offensively for Orient-Macksburg.
Davidson also recorded three hits, driving in one run. Caviness finished with two hits and one RBI. Jesse Johnson, Triston Davidson and Seth White each drove in one run for Orient-Macksburg.
