David Phillips Monroe

David Burdette Phillips, 74 of Monroe, IA passed away at his home Saturday, July 20, 2013 with his loving family at his side.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 24th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 25th at the Corydon United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM with Pastor Diane Olsen Schroeder officiating the service. Preceding the services, the family will greet visitors beginning at 12:00 at the Corydon United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Swan Cemetery on Friday, July 26th at 10:30 AM.

Dave was born on September 20, 1938 to Don and Mary (Woodard) Phillips in Bussey, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Creston High School in 1956. He completed community college in Creston in 1958.

On October 12, 1958 he was married to Jacqueline Frances Churchill who remained at his side until his passing.

Dave continued his education and graduated with a BA from Northwest Missouri State University (Maryville) in 1962. He completed his MA in Education Administration in 1968 from Northeast Missouri State (Kirksville), and also completed his Specialist Certification in Education through Iowa State University in 1988.

Dave served as an Industrial Arts instructor from 1962-1970 for Grand Valley (Kellerton) and Wayne of Corydon Community Schools. He served as an elementary and Jr. High principal at Wayne for the final 26 years of his education career, retiring in July 1996.

Education and working with children was a primary motivation in Dave’s life. Dave loved sports and served as a coach for track, softball, football and basketball while at Grand Valley and Wayne Schools. Watching his children and grandchildren participate in these activities were one of Dave’s passions.

Dave enjoyed many other hobbies and activities such as gardening, cooking, canning, woodworking, hunting, fishing and traveling to visit children and grandchildren. Sharing time with friends and family on camping and fishing adventures were some of his favorite pastimes. He spent many hours working in his woodshop, whether it was a small project for a grandchild or a restoration project requested by a friend, he always found time to work in his shop.

Dave was also very active in many organizations including the Boy Scouts as a leader, United Methodist Church as Youth Leader, Methodist Men’s Group and many others.  He served the community of Corydon on the City Council and as Mayor for nearly 20 years. He also served as the Swimming Pool manager, as well as many other community planning committees while he lived and worked in the Corydon area.

In January 2008 Dave and Jacque moved from Corydon to Monroe where they have continued to greet friends and family and enjoy their retirement.

Those left to cherish Dave’s memories are his wife, Jacque of Monroe; daughter Tammy (Russell) Bay of North Liberty; sons Jim (Kelly) Phillips of Monroe, Kim (Robin) Phillips of Salt Lake City, UT, Brian (Kelly) Phillips of Cary, NC; grandchildren Katlyn and Brandon Bay of North Liberty, IA, Lauren and Madison Phillips of Mount Pleasant, SC, Katherine Phillips of Salt Lake City, Logan and Jacob Phillips of Monroe, and Kamron, Spencer and Lance Phillips of Cary, NC; brother James (Karen) Phillips of Woodbridge, CT.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Central Iowa, Heifer International, Local Food Pantry, Mid Iowa Council Boy Scouts of America – Camp Mitigwa Fund, American Diabetes Association.
