ISU Extension and Outreach to offer pressure canning workshop

ORIENT — A pressure canning workshop is being made available as part of ISU Extension and Outreach’s new “Preserve the Taste of Summer” program. The workshop will be Aug. 10 at Henry A. Wallace Center near Orient.

“Preserve the Taste of Summer” was developed in response to increased interest in food preservation. It is a comprehensive food preservation program that includes both online lessons and hands-on workshops. It is an opportunity for anyone age 18 years or older who is interested in learning how to safely preserve foods.

Before attending the workshop, individuals must register for the “Preserve the Taste of Summer” online program at the silver level and complete the first two online lessons, which are food safety, canning basics and then two method specific, one must be pressure canning. After completing the online lessons, print the certificates and bring them to the workshop. After completing the online lessons, individuals are eligible to attend the workshop.

To register for the program, go to: There are four levels of participation for which a person can register. To attend the workshop in August, register at the silver level, which is $50. This fee will include the online lessons and attendance at the workshop. Participants will leave the workshop with a jar of properly canned vegetables and additional food preservation materials.
