St. John’s UCC to Celebrate 135 years of Ministry to Creston

Published: Thursday, July 25, 2013 10:44 a.m. CDT

St. John's Church, at the corner of South Maple and Fremont streets, was founded Feb. 4, 1878. A church building was built and was dedicated Aug. 11, 1878.

"St. John's has always celebrated its anniversary in August simply because planning anything in February is risky due to Iowa's unpredictable weather," said the Rev. Daniel Moore, who has been St. John's pastor since 2006. "This year we not only mark, but we are going to celebrate our 135 years of ministry to the south side of Creston."

Just in the past year alone, St. John's members have put a new cross on the top of the steeple, had the front church doors removed, refitted and reinstalled and just this month had a majority of the roof re-shingled.

"But the church is not a building, it's the people," said Moore. "We have had new members join our church every year for the past seven years. And for three out of the last four years, we have had more baptisms than funerals. Those are the reasons we're going to celebrate."

Aug. 11 will be a day of celebration. The service of worship (based on the 100th anniversary service from 1978) will begin at 10:30 a.m. that day. (Sunday services at St. John's usually begin at 9 a.m.) A number of church members will be sharing their musical abilities. Moore has written a special hymn for the service titled "Faith of Our Fathers, Mothers Too." And the sermon will be titled "Why Small Churches Matter."

When the service is over, there will be a potluck lunch and time of fellowship in the parish hall. Photographs of the church and its members will be shown on a continual loop, and there will be a trivia contest. If the weather permits, there will also be a few games for children outside.

"I hope to see our church filled to the rafters on Aug. 11 as we celebrate the ministry and mission of St. John's Church," said Moore.
