Endow Union County awards more than $103,000

Union County-South Central Iowa Community Foundation Board recently awarded 20 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Endow Union County grants approved totaled $103,458.41. The grants were presented July 2 at Afton Community Center. Those receiving grants this year were:

• City of Afton; $5,000 to create a splash pad

• Horse and Riders 4-H Club; $6,000 to re-do 4-H arena surface

• East Union Community School; $6,000 for motorized bleachers

• Mayflower Heritage Christian School; $5,000 for its endowment fund

• Union County Historical Society; $2,813 to repair original railroad crossing signal tower; $702.62 to weatherize horse-drawn machine shed; $900 to re-roof the caboose

• Creston Community School Early Childhood Center; $975 to bring Des Moines Playhouse to Creston and East Union schools

• Afton Volunteer Fire Department; $8,000 for a thermal imaging camera

• McKinley Park restoration; $9,500 for playground equipment

• High Lakes Outdoor Alliance; $20,000 for building a shooting complex

• Triumph Early Childhood program; $5,000 to purchase securement vests

• Joyful Sparks Preschool; $3,178 to create a safe playing area for children

• Innovative Industries; $6,000 to purchase a box-making machine

• East Union Early Childhood Center; $9,858 to purchase learning curriculum

• Creston Community School District; $940.32 for curriculum materials and books

• Sons of American Legion Post No. 96; $5,030.75 for construction of a shelter house

• East Union ASPIRE endowment; $5,000 for its endowment fund

• First Union Methodist Church; $2,000 to purchase a defibrillator

• Matura Head Start; $1,560.72 for materials and books
