Ione Veatch Mount Ayr

Ione Veatch, 88, of Mount Ayr, formerly of Creston, died July 31, 2013, at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, Creston. The Rev. Dan Moore and the Rev. Eydie Stephens will officiate. Burial will be in Witt Cemetery near Bridgewater. Open visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Murray Saddle Club and Texas Southwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America in San Angelo, Texas. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.

Leola Ione (Davis) Veatch, daughter of Merna (Sullivan) and W.W. Davis, was born a twin Jan. 16, 1925, at her parents farm between Kent and Lenox.

Ione attended country school until 1935, then entered the fifth grade in Kent. Ione graduated from Kent after two years of high school. She then attended Creston High School and graduated in 1942.

Ione worked at Kent State Savings Bank until she married.

On Sept. 15, 1944, Ione married Staff Sgt. Howard Clinton Veatch at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Manhattan, Kan. Howard was stationed at Fort Riley. From there, the couple moved to Elizabethtown, Ky., where Howard was transferred.

In 1945, Howard was shipped overseas to Japan, so Ione returned to her parents’ home, until Howard’s discharge Jan. 8, 1946.

Ione and Howard spent their entire marriage life farming around Lenox, Kent, Greenfield, Nevinville, Cromwell and Creston.

On June 4, 1973, Ione started working part time at Greater Regional Hospital as a night clerk and went full time Oct. 28, 1973. Ione retired from the hospital after 25 years.

In 1979, Ione and Howard purchased an acreage west of Creston. After Howard’s death on April 9, 1983, Ione continued to live on the acreage and work at the hospital.

In 1997, Ione sold her acreage and moved to Quiet Harbor Estates in Creston.

In January of 2010, she moved in with her son.

In January of 2013, Ione moved to Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr.

Ione is survived by her daughter Carol Ann (husband Dick) Reeve of Creston; son Hal Dean (wife Deb) Veatch of Creston; sister Alice Campbell of Adel; grandchildren, Steven and Michelle Rhine, Rick and Wendy Reeve, Annette and Pete Faux, David Reeve, Heather Rogers, Clinton Veatch, JD Conard and Robyn and Jon Cornick; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Jordan Rhine, Elizabeth, Cassandra and Hayden Reeve, Elsie and Sullivan Faux, Elizabeth Conard, Madison and Jack Veatch, Jacob Cornick and James Lander; “extra” daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many relatives, friends and loved ones.

In addition to her husband, Ione was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister Leone Davis; brothers, Arthur and Clyde Davis; great-grandson Sawyer James Rhine and granddaughter Christy Ann Rhine.
