Ladies Lakeshore


Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met July 31.

Canasta winners were Barb Veitz, first; Maxine May, second; and Loretta Kelly, third.

Kelly won the door prize.

Janet Kessler was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Alpha Sigma

Iowa Alpha Sigma Master Chapter met 7:30 p.m. July 25 at the home of Loretta Kelly. President Marilyn Larimore called the meeting to order. Nine members answered roll call with their plans for attending the Iowa State Fair.

Minutes of the two previous meetings were read and approved.

Social Chairman Norma Putnam reported on the upcoming meetings, with the next one being held at Summit House, a cookout with spouses invited. Members are to bring a salad or dessert.

Putnam and Pat Fils reported on the 2013 convention they had attended in West Des Moines. There were a lot of forums, massage therapist and murder mystery, which was concluded on the last day. A total of $9,252.12 was donated to Camp High Hopes, the 2012-13 state service project. Clear Lake will host the next convention. There was a total of 177 attending.

Kelly gave the program on Beaconsfield.

The closing ritual was repeated by the members. Refreshments were served by the hostess.


TOPS 1338

TOPS 1338 of Creston met 5 p.m. July 29 at the First United Methodist Church. Eight members weighed in with a total net loss of 9.75 pounds during the week. Lola Baucom was the monthly best loser, with second place won by an anonymous member. Janice Walston and Maxine Wasson from Bedford were special guests.

Squares were won by Diana Loomis, and fines went to the treasury. A new contest called “Loser Lotto” will begin next week. The Red Can Challenge is to measure or weigh food for a day.

Walston, area captain of TOPS, gave the program. She presented an illustrated talk on “Real People, Real Weight Loss.”

The TOPS pledge was given, and the meeting was dismissed by Loomis.

Monday was the next meeting of TOPS 1338, gathering for weigh-in at 5 p.m. Nine members were present, with Monica Belew as the week’s best loser and Lola Baucom as runner-up. Anna Thompson called the business session to order with the TOPS opening pledge.

Correspondence was read from Barbara Bratton reminding members renewals are due and a list of the highest weights of members and totals they have lost since joining.

New business concerned the possibility of Creston TOPS 1338 hosting the TOPS area fall meeting. Officers were asked to remain after adjournment for more discussion on the topic.

The secretary’s report was given by Marisue Lewis, and the treasurer’s report by Alice Brown.

Lola Baucom was presented with a prize for having won the “All That Jazz Contest.”  The new contest titled “Loser Lotto” began and will continue until the card is complete.  Squares were won by Belew, and the treasury gained the fines. The Red Can Challenge is to eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day for a week.

The program was appropriate as the Iowa State Fair begins soon. An anonymous member talked about “Fun at the Fair,” emphasizing proper eating habits and how to get one’s needed exercise. She also included a vow taken from the August TOPS Magazine.

The meeting adjourned with the recitation of the closing TOPS pledge.

The next meeting will be Aug. 12 at the Methodist Church with Lewis giving the program. All who are interested in weight loss are invited to attend.


Creston Lions Club

Creston Lions Club met 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at The Pizza Ranch. President Jodi Johnson opened the meeting by leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. Delmer Brown asked the blessing for the meal.

The program committee members were Pauline McCoy and Susan Weight. Because of health situations, Bob and Pauline McCoy were not able to attend.

Weight introduced Bill and Marsha Magers of Creston. They are members of the Rustic Relics organization. All the members own, restore and drive Model A Ford vehicles. Bill told of his long-time hobby with old cars and his efforts to connect with others with the same interests. He related stories of finding and restoring cars and other vehicles. Rustic Relics members drive in parades and take road trips. There are national and state organizations that promote the hobby of antique vehicles.

During the business meeting, the minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

Lions Club signs in various locations were discussed.

Acquiring funding for a digital camera for the KidSight program was discussed. Tom Braymen and Dean Brant explained details about this effort. A digital camera would replace the current camera used when Lions members hold vision screenings for preschool children.

The pork chop supper is scheduled for Sept. 19 at McKinley Park. This is a fundraiser held in cooperation with the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. Tickets and more details will be available soon.

The drawing was won by Braymen.

The meeting was adjourned.

The Board of Directors will meet Tuesday morning at Adams Street Espresso. A noon meeting will be held Aug. 20 at The Pizza Ranch.

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 20 members and two guests. Chris Frederickson president-elect, presided. Ed Ritter did the prayer, and Paul Lorenz was finemaster.

The program was Vicki Homewood and Joan Linderman with South Central Area Special Olympics who discussed their different competitions for the athletes. The Kiwanis Club donated $300 for their expenses.

The club was updated on the pork chop dinner fundraiser 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at McKinley Park.
