Marjorie Jessen, 94, of Creston died Aug. 10, 2013, at Creston Nursing and Rehab Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 25 and 34. The Rev. Dan Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to St. John’s United Church of Christ or Cerebral Palsy Foundation. Marjorie Elaine (Schlapia) Jessen, daughter of Ruth Madge (Been) and Owen Lee Schlapia, was born March 3, 1919, in Benton.
Marjorie graduated from Benton High School in 1936. She went on to get training to be a licensed practical nurse. She cared for mothers and babies in homes. She moved to Creston in 1938, and continued to do home care. Marjorie started working at Greater Community Hospital in 1942.
On July 1, 1945, Marjorie married William T. Jessen in Creston. They settled in Creston, where Marjorie continued working at Greater Community Hospital until 1972.
Marjorie then worked as director of nurses at Creston Manor.
William died Aug. 6, 1986.
Marjorie was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, where she played the piano for Sunday worship and Sunday school children. Marjorie served as a volunteer for the Auxiliary L.P.N. Association, serving as president and treasurer, for Life Line and as a caregiver for the Bloodmobile.
Marjorie is survived by her son David (wife Helen) Jessen of Creston; grandchildren, Toby (wife Patty) Jessen, Brenda Ewing, Chris Jessen, Tresha (husband Richard) Millslagle, Kari Nielsen and Kristi (husband Joe) Frederick; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Marjorie was preceded in death by her granddaughter Kimmy (husband Nathan) Gross; brothers, Hugh, Francis, LeRoy and Harry Schlapia; and sisters, Ruth Page and Wanda Lorenz.
