Bedford High School’s Peyton Russell will attend Southwestern Community College as a two-sport athlete this fall. Russell will compete on the softball and women’s basketball teams for the Spartans.
Russell, who played catcher and infielder for the Bedford Bulldogs, signed with SWCC Head Coach Lindsay Stumpff and the Spartans’ softball program last week. Russell was named KMA Radio’s senior player of the year last year. She was named second team for the Pride of Iowa Conference her sophomore and senior years and made Pride of Iowa Conference honorable mention her eighth grade season. She was named to the All-Western Iowa team as an eighth grader. Russell played travel ball for 10 years.
Addae Houston, SWCC head women’s basketball coach, is excited about what Russell will bring to his team as well. As a senior, Russell averaged 12 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game for a Bedford team that went 22-2 and reached the regional finals.
Russell is the daughter of Jeff and Rhonda Russell of Bedford.
Martensdale-St. Marys third baseman Katrina DeVore signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for the Southwestern Community College Spartans.
Devore and the Blue Devils made appearances in five consecutive state tournaments. They were state champions in 2012. DeVore was a three-time all-state performer, three-time Pride of Iowa Conference all-academic team selection, all-district selection, and a first team all-conference selection.
DeVore is the daughter of Brian and Tena DeVore of Norwalk.
