Ankeny coach

ANKENY — Matt Delger is the interim girls basketball coach at Ankeny High School.

Delger, a Chicago native, came to Ankeny after serving as the head girls’ basketball coach and athletic director at East Union last year. His team posted a 5-17 record.

Delger previously spent three years at CAL of Latimer, where he was the head boys’ basketball coach and an assistant football coach.

Delger becomes the third coach named to the position since Scott DeJong announced his departure last spring to become the head coach at northside Ankeny Centennial. DeJong guided the Hawkettes to six state championships during his 20 seasons at the school, including four consecutive titles from 2002-05.

Former Iowa State star Kelsey Bolte originally was hired to replace DeJong, but she left when she was unable to land a teaching position in the school district. Brent Walker Jr., a longtime Ankeny resident and a former Grand View women’s assistant coach, was then hired last month.

Walker, who works in the insurance industry, recently announced he is going to relocate in Chicago for his full-time job and will be unable able to coach. School officials said a permanent replacement will be hired next spring.
