Many of the local and area schools started this week.
Also, the week zero football games start Friday night. Lenox and East Union kick off the season this Friday.
This summer seemed to go pretty fast. Although technically we still have a month before fall kicks in.
I was kind of surprised by the low attendance at the Iowa State Fair this year.
The cooler than usual weather should have attracted a few more folks than the usual hot weather we get during fair week. My guess is the lack of quality entertainment may have hurt the turnout some. Also, the prices are starting to get a little steep for the average family. By the time you pay to get in, parking, a turkey leg and lemonade for a family of four, you have more than $100 spent! Even the glider is $7 for a round trip. It’s getting about time for the state fair board to think about some “family deals” that many ballparks and zoos have been trying. Or maybe some half-price days!
In today’s world you have to do a lot more marketing and promoting to get people out.
It’s a wonderful state fair, but in today’s world you have to have something new or different to get people out.
Balloon Days is coming to Creston within the next month. The Creston Chamber of Commerce has T-shirts and sweatshirts on sale for the event. This year’s shirt is pretty. The white shirt and full color artwork really stands out.
The local community college doesn’t start back until next Wednesday.
Housing seems to be in short supply this year. So if you have a place to rent or want to take in a college student, all you have to do is call SWCC. They are looking for housing for a number of students who currently don’t have a spot to land.
The “last big holiday” of the summer is only a week away. Labor Day makes an early appearance this year with the Monday holiday showing up Sept. 2.
It is the main kickoff weekend for college football. Iowa, Iowa State and Nebraska are all at home and in action. Northern Iowa visits Iowa State that weekend. The following Thursday the NFL kicks off with two games on the opening night.
If you are going to be out traveling the highways and interstates, you had better watch yourself. There will be extra patrols out starting Monday all the way through Labor Day. Not only will they be looking for speeders, but also drunk drivers, so be safe!
Watch your mailbox! Any day now, you will be getting your property-tax statement. No matter what county you live in, the annual billing first half will be due the end of September.
The general economy is growing at less than 2 percent. It will be interesting to see how many of the local taxing entities were below that figure, especially if the land valuations went up dramatically.
The annual Creston Panther Football kickoff cookout and fundraiser is Saturday.
The event is at Crestmoor and is always a lot of fun. There is a great auction, plus a nice dinner. Good ole Tom Hartsock has tickets if you need one. He can be reached at 782-8516.
Our annual fall sports guide will be out next week. All the area teams are represented. Local Sports Editor Scott Vicker and Sports Reporter Larry Peterson do a great job of covering the area teams and always put together a nice preview section. It’s a good read for local sports fans.
Thought for the week: Success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It is courage that counts. — Winston Churchill
