Brice and Carolyn Johnson Goodyear, Ariz.

Carolyn, 74, and Brice Johnson, 78, of Goodyear, Ariz., formerly of Gravity, died Jan. 8, 2013, and June 1, 2013, respectively.

Joint celebration of life memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Washington Cemetery in Gravity. There will be a Masonic prayer and military honors at the cemetery. Visitation with family present will be after the service at Junction Cafe in Bedford. Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford is in charge of arrangements. In memory of Carolyn, memorials may be directed to Taylor County Historical Museum, and in memory of Brice, memorials may be directed to Gravity Volunteer Fire Department. Carolyn Mae (Pugh) Johnson, daughter of Iva (Struwe) and Homer Pugh, was born May 3, 1938, in Corning.

Carolyn graduated from Lenox High School, obtained her teaching certificate from Iowa Western Community College, and began her teaching career.

On June 28, 1959, Carolyn married Brice Glen Johnson at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox. They settled on the Gravity family farm.

Carolyn taught in Bedford Community School District and at both Gravity and Bedford elementary schools.

Carolyn was active in the community, school events and various organizations.

Brice and Carolyn relocated to Arizona in 1986.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter Deborah of Goodyear, Ariz.; son Brent (Tamara) of Spirit Lake; grandson Marcus; stepgrandson Chad (Liz); sister Marlene; many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and former students.

Brice Glen Johnson, son of Mary (Melvin) and LeRoy Ellis Johnson, was born June 3, 1934, on the rural Taylor County farm.

Brice graduated from Gravity High School and joined the U.S. Army on Nov. 30, 1954. He was discharged with a Medal of Good Honor on Nov. 14, 1957, and continued to serve under the Army Reserves until Nov. 29, 1962. Brice had recently been awarded the Freedom Team Salute Award from the U.S. Army for his continued service to his country.

Upon return to the family farm he continued his education at Iowa Western Community College.

On June 28, 1959, Brice married Carolyn Mae Pugh at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox.

They later settled on the family farm near Gravity.

Brice was involved in various community activities, including Gravity Volunteer Fire Department, Gravity Masonic Lodge (which is now part of Bedford Masonic Lodge), awarded his 50-year membership from Grand Lodge of Iowa, Bedford Community School Board and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

Brice and Carolyn relocated to Arizona in 1986.

Brice is survived by his daughter Deborah of Goodyear, Ariz.; son Brent (Tamara) of Spirit Lake; grandson Marcus; stepgrandson Chad (Liz); sister Irene; brothers, Edward and Russel; sister-in-law Marlene; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
