AFTON — East Union put the first two points on its new scoreboard, but Lenox stormed back for the 50-2 victory during Friday’s Zero Week matchup in Afton.
Both teams had a slow start on the offensive side of the ball. The Tigers forced four straight three-and-outs for the East Union offense.
The Eagles defense took advantage of two fumbled snaps to earn a turnover on downs and a safety with a minute left in the first quarter.
After the first quarter, Lenox’s ground game got rolling. The duo of Dustyn Rauch and Dustin Gordon kept the Eagles off balance, alternating runs to the outside and up the middle.
“I thought our skill positions played really well tonight,” Lenox head coach Allen Dukes said.
Lenox earned 348 yards on the ground and had six rushing touchdowns.
Rauch broke loose for three touchdown rushes of 31, 34 and 41 yards. Gordon also had three rushing touchdowns and connected with Spencer Brown for a passing touchdown.
“I know there in the second half, there in the third quarter, when Gordon took the option play and ran it in on them, it just took the wind right out of them,” Dukes said.
Dukes said in future contests the team’s blocking and passing game will have to improve to open up more opportunities to run the ball successfully.
“We weren’t able to throw the ball tonight, they didn’t give us time,” Dukes said about the Eagle defense.
Eagle quarterback Trevor Barnett was flushed from the pocket on multiple occasions, disrupting East Union’s spread offense.
East Union was only able to accumulate 60 total yards of offense against the stiff Tiger defense. Lenox also snagged two interceptions to stop two Eagle drives that were across midfield.
“We’ve got to be more disciplined in what we are doing,” East Union head coach Steve Kinyon said. “We’ve got to get after our blocking.”
Caleb Lange led the Tiger defense with 12 tackles.
Kinyon said the biggest change he wants to see in his team for Friday is an aggressive mentality for four quarters of football.
“I think our defense did their job during the very first (quarter), then they started to get a little worn,” Kinyon said.
Lenox takes on Essex/South Page and East Union travels to Moravia on Friday.
