Are the trumpeter swans still here?

In May, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff released three trumpeter swans at Summit Lake in Creston. They were 11-month-old cygnet swans weighing approximately 22 pounds with necks measuring about 24-inches long.

They are part of the DNR’s statewide trumpeter swan restoration effort. The question now is, are they still in Creston?

This morning Chad Paup, wildlife biologist for Iowa DNR, said he observed the birds three weeks ago on the north side of Summit Lake. He believes the swans are still in Creston. Paup said the birds now have their flight feathers so it’s possible in the coming months Crestonians may see the swans flying in the area.

Martin Luther King Jr. speech

Fifty years ago today, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of more than 200,000 people in Washington, D.C.

The sound bite history best remembers – “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” – came 11 minutes into King’s 16-minute speech.

This afternoon, current U.S. President Barack Obama — who was 2 years old and growing up in Hawaii when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech — will give his own speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Fifty years later, Obama — the nation’s first black president — stands as the most high-profile example of the racial progress King espoused.

Several Crestonians are asking if Creston Farmers’ Market will be open on Labor Day (Monday). The answer? Yes, it will be open.

Brian Zachary, market manager, said it will be open regular market hours from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Labor Day. The market is averaging about 20 vendors this year, Zachary said, and they are selling a variety of items. He said, last week they even had fresh peaches and apples available.

Zachary added the farmers’ market won’t be open much longer though. The last market is slated for Sept. 30.
