With the game time temperature exceeding 100 degrees Friday, the Creston/O-M freshmen defeated Chariton 35-0.
Because of the weather conditions, quarters were shortened to eight minutes, and officials allowed frequent water breaks.
Panther co-coach Jon Thomson was pleased with how the team responded.
“Despite the heat, I was very happy with the way the boys performed on their first Friday night lights action,” Thomson said. “We took plenty of water breaks and warmed up without our pads on. Chariton provided us a water mister. We had many towels on ice to cool the players down.”
Players were forced to play both ways with an 18-man roster, of which four were injured.
Chase Shiltz carried 20 times for 124 yards and a touchdown. Brody Frain and Seth Thompson alternated at quarterback and combined for 2-of-4 passing for 36 yards and a touchdown. Tom Steinbach had seven total tackles, and Gavin Woods had a defensive touchdown on an interception.
“We made plenty of freshman mistakes, once our nerves settled,” Thomson said. “We recovered very well. I’m pleased with the progress we have made. I am only getting more excited about the game to come as we are unwrapping the talents of this team.”

Chariton took a 24-12 victory over the Creston/O-M junior varsity Monday night at Panther Field.
Chase Shiltz rushed for 260 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries for the Panthers. Brody Frain was 6-of-13 passing for 51 yards, and Wyatt Thompson had six tackles for the defense, including one for loss.
The Panthers had four turnovers — three on interceptions and one fumble. After Schlitz’s second touchdown with 6:54 remaining, Chariton sewed up the win with a 96-yard kickoff return.
“We saw a lot of good things from our very young JV team,” said Panther coach Kevin Cooper, “but we weren’t able to secure the win. We had our opportunities throughout the night, but turnovers really hurt our chances. Hopefully we can continue to give great effort and build on some of our experiences throughout the year.”
Receiver and defensive back McClain Haines, returning from a knee injury, suffered a broken finger that will require surgery.
