The Southwestern Community College men and women ranked among the top 25 tams in the nation, according to the first National Junior College Athletic Association poll of the season.
The Spartan men placed fourth at the Region XI Time Trial in Mason City on Aug. 24. They sit 19th in the NJCAA polls.
Four other schools in the region — Iowa Central Community College, North Iowa Area Community College, Iowa Western Community College and Iowa Lakes Community College made the first poll of the season.
“It’s an honor to be ranked this early in the season,” Spartan head coach Bill Huntington said. “This helps show we run in one of the toughest regions in the nation.”
The Spartan women start the season ranked 24th. Iowa Central, NIACC, Iowa Western and Des Moines Area Community College also represent Region XI in the poll.
“We have a lot of work left to do yet this season,” Huntington said. “I’m excited by the improvements we are making every day in practice. If we can stay healthy, we have a chance to have one of the best seasons in Spartan history.”
Southwestern is back in action Saturday at Central College. The first race is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
