Drought update: Rain chances increase in weekend forecast

Dry conditions continue across Iowa as a wet spring quickly faded into a “flash drought.” More than 41 percent of the state is in severe drought conditions. Union County is split by severe and moderate drought conditions.

State Climatologist Harry Hillaker said the past two years Iowa has experienced drought conditions, but the two dry spells had a lot of differences. Temperature, subsoil moisture levels and inconsistency of rain all played factors into the drought.

The National Weather Service forecast shows southwest Iowa getting a break from the recent heat with temperatures dropping into the low 70s over the weekend. This weekend will also be the best chance for rain for the area — a 60 percent chance of percepitation Saturday night into Sunday.

Rain chances continue through Tuesday.
