Creston/O-M 28, Atlantic 14

Creston/O-M opened Class 3A District 1 play with a 28-14 victory over visiting Atlantic.

After a sloppy start with penalties on four of the first six plays of the game, the Panthers struck first with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Phipps to Jesse Rathe.

Alex Nielsen captured the first of his two pass interceptions in the game, and Trevor Frain ran 2 yards for a touchdown in a short-yardage package modeled after Oklahoma's "Belldozer" look with quarterback Blake Bell. In this variation, called "Tank" formation by the Panthers, quarterback Brandon Phipps lines up wide at wingback, and Frain takes a direct snap and runs behind backfield blockers Seth Maitlen and Adam Baker.

Creston/O-M turned it over receiving a punt, and Atlantic converted with a 15-yard touchdown run by Jacob Dvorak, who was making his first appearance of the season after a suspension. The half ended with a 14-7 Creston/O-M lead.

From the same Tank formation, Frain bolted 55 yards when he busted outside for a touchdown to make it 21-7 in the third quarter. With a chance to make it 28-7, at second-and-goal at the 1 yard line, penalties again stymied the Panthers and a 26-yard field goal try was missed.

An interception by Atlantic's Brendan Holmes set up a 3-yard quarterback sneak touchdown by Atlantic's Joseph Walker, as the Trojans cut it to 21-14 with 9:34 remaining.

Creston/O-M answered with a successful drive, as Phipps was 4-of-4 passing for 64 yards on the possession, ending with a 17-yard rollout touchdown toss to Gavin Leith.

Nielsen and Pals each finished with two interceptions, as Atlantic had as many passes intercepted (five) as completions. Frain had 19 tackles, including an 11-yard quarterback sack, and he ran for 104 yards and two TDs. Adam Baker picked up 83 yards on 22 carries.

Phipps finished 15-of-25 passing for 183 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Next week the Panthers (3-0 overall, 1-0 district) play at Adel against an ADM team that outscored Glenwood Friday, 48-38. Atlantic falls to 1-2 and 0-1.

Sidney 43, Lenox 8

LENOX — The tone for the game was set when Lenox fumbled the opening snap and lost seven yards.

The Tigers went three-and-out on the possession and Sidney speedster Chris Osborne went 27 yards on the first play of the ensuing possession for a touchdown.

Sidney forced another Lenox three-and-out, and then on the second play of the Cowboy drive, Osborne took a pitch on the left side and went 33 yards for a touchdown.

Osborne scored three touchdowns, all in the first half, as the Cowboys built a 43-0 lead by halftime.

The lone Lenox score came late in the game on a Josh Mitchell touchdown run.

Lenox falls to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Eight-Man District 8, while Sidney takes control of the district at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in district play.
