SHENANDOAH — Creston cleared another hurdle Saturday in its quest to regain a winning volleyball program.

The Panthers knocked off Class 1A eighth-ranked Stanton in the semifinals on the way to finishing second in the Fillie Invitational Saturday. Creston defeated the Viqueens, 19-21, 21-15, 15-10. Shenandoah defeated Bedford in the other semifinal match.

The host Fillies won the championship, downing the Panthers 21-18, 21-9 in the finals.

“We never had beaten Stanton,” Creston coach Polly Luther. “I had set that as a goal for us. They have (Carmen) Subbert and she’s a rock star. She’s not real tall, but she can get up and do anything with the ball. We got up and put some hands on her ball, and when she was in the back row, we came after them.”

Regaining that kind of intensity for the championship match proved difficult, Luther said.

“We’re still not at that point where we keep it up after beating a team like Stanton,” Luther said. “Shen is good. They have two really good hitters. We got on the bus at 6:30 in the morning and didn’t get home until 5:30 that night. The girls played pretty well throughout a long day.”

Creston went 4-0 in two rounds of pool play, beating Fremont-Mills, Lenox, Southwest Valley and Essex.

Haylee LaMasters was recognized for her passing and serving by making the all-tournament team, and Natalie Mostek earned the same honor for her play at the net and strong serving. As a team, Creston served 96 percent for the day.

Stanton beat Bedford for third place. Southwest Valley, which lost to Creston in a competitive pool play match, ended up fifth. Lenox lost twice in preliminary pool play.
