Zola Freeberg Creston

Zola Freeberg, 95, of Creston died Sept. 16, 2013, at Creston Nursing and Rehab Center.

A private graveside service will be held at Graceland Cemetery south of Creston. The Rev. Chuck Spindler will officiate. Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Crest Baptist Church building fund. Online condolences may be left at

Zola Katherine Freeberg, daughter of Mathilda Lorene (Hilstrum) and William Ephriam Venard, was born July 9, 1918, in Neola.

Zola graduated from Neola High School in 1935.

In September 1935, Zola married Eldred Lloyd LeRette in Storm Lake.

They settled in Hancock, before moving to Neola in 1939, and later to Council Bluffs in 1946, where she was a homemaker. Zola also worked for Frito Lay for nine-plus years at the Omaha, Neb., and Council Bluffs locations. She also assisted with training in Topeka, Kan., for the potato chip branch location.

Eldred died Sept. 10, 1955.

On Oct. 3, 1959, Zola married Carl Herman Freeberg in Omaha, Neb.

They settled in Omaha, where Zola worked as a homemaker and babysitter for 27 years, prior to moving to Creston in 1999.

Carl died in 1998.

Zola was an active member of Crest Baptist Church in Creston.

Zola is survived by her daughter Joyce (husband David) Young of Creston; sons, Donald (wife Carol) LeRette of Council Bluffs, David (wife Mary) LeRette of Omaha, Neb., and Dwight (wife Jeanette) LeRette of Des Moines; son-in-law Robert Green of Logan; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and sister Wilda Ellerbeck of LaVista, Neb.

In addtion to her husbands, Zola was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Katherine Green; and sisters, Isabelle Coffelt and Erville LeRette.
