Alice Bridgeman Grout Corning

Alice Bridgeman Grout, 82, of Corning died Sept. 21, 2013, at Alegent Creighton Health Mercy Hospital in Corning.

A Mass of Christian Burial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Corning. The Rev. Lazarus Kirigia will officiate. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Corning. Open visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a 6 p.m. Rosary at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 701 Seventh St., Corning. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Southwest Iowa. Online condolences may be left at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.

Alice Mae Bridgeman Grout, daughter of Etha Pauline (Ogburn) and Glenn Shearburn, was born Aug. 2, 1931, in Corning.

Alice grew up on the family farm south of Corning. Alice attended country school and continued on to Corning High School. Alice worked as a waitress throughout her high school years and graduated in 1948.

After graduation, Alice went to work at the battery factory in Red Oak.

On Aug. 9, 1949, Alice married John Bridgeman, and the couple made their home in Corning.

Alice and John purchased her father’s farm in 1960. Alice and John also opened Bridgeman Plumbing and Heating Company. Later, Alice went to work for Corning Nursing and Rehab, after it was built, and worked there many years.

John died in 1989.

On Sept. 21, 1991, Alice married Harry Grout.

Alice and Harry made their home in Loveland, Colo., before moving back to Corning.

Alice and Harry were treasurers of the senior citizens center and also helped in starting Senior Day at Adams County Fair.

Alice was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar Society, Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels and helped with bingo at the nursing home.

Harry died in 2010.

Alice is survived by her children, Dianne (Stephen) Kinder of Chillicothe, Mo., William (Terry) Bridgeman of Chandler, Ariz., and Elizabeth (Dale) Motsinger of Marion; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; stepsons, Frank (Ruth) Grout of Berthoud, Colo., Harry (Susan) Grout of Erie, Colo., Charles (Olga) Grout of Pearsall, Texas, and John Grout of Denver, Colo.; stepdaughter, Janet Offerdahl of Longmont, Colo.; eight step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addtion to her husbands, Alice was preceded in death by her parents; sister Dorothy Doss; brother Glenn Shearburn; and stepdaughter June Grout.
