Southwest Shutterbug Club looks at many different genres of photography, such as inanimate objects like this antique typewriter, taken by Deb Loudon. The club members have taken photos of many things such as plants, flowers, buildings and art.

Imagine capturing the quick flutter of a butterfly wing, or the sparkle of water as the sun drops below the horizon. Southwest Shutterbug Club does capture that, and more.

The local photography club, in existence since 2008, and Creston will play host to North Central Camera Club Council’s annual photography convention Thursday through Saturday.

“We really want people to know that that’s a big thing for Creston to have it here, an honor,” said Deb Loudon, president of Southwest Shutterbug Club. “Our theme is ‘Hidden Treasures in Our Small Town.’”

Photography convention

More than 40 camera clubs from the north-central area of the United States will be participating in the convention.

“The N4C people are excited to come to a small town instead of a city. And, we have so much to offer here in southwest Iowa,” said Sheila Sutton, original member of the photography club. “The convention is officially called the N4C Fall Convention. They always plan within a year or so out, and 18 months ago at the spring convention they said, ‘We don’t have anybody for 2013.’ And, I asked, ‘How many people usually come to these conventions.’ And, they said, ‘Oh, about 100 to 125.’ … So, I said, ‘I think we could do this.’”

The convention will take place at Supertel Inn and Conference Center, as well as other local spots in the southwest Iowa area. A trip to Mount Pisgah is planned, as well as a trip to uptown Creston and historical complex.

“This convention is going to bring money into our club. Up until this point, we have been able to operate, and that’s it,” said Sutton. “If we need something, ... we had to raise the money. The convention, we get to keep a percentage of what we bring in for that. So, we are excited.”

The annual conventions offer learning opportunities through field trips and professional classes. It also allows for networking with other clubs and brings money into the community and local camera clubs.

Snapshot of the club

Southwest Shutterbug Club was founded in 2008 by Deb Bates with a mission to attract all levels of photographers, train each other and share ideas. There are 25 active members in the club, and 10 to 15 members who are less active. Loudon said the club is looking for new members all the time.

“Our mission, I think, is to be a group of like-minded people who enjoy photography, and we want to learn from each other and be able to lift each other up in our photography,” Sutton said.

Southwest Shutterbug Club meets the first and third Thursdays of every month. The first meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Creston, and focuses on business. The second is a learning opportunity, and the details of the meeting change each month (see their monthly meeting times in the CNA). The cost to join is $20 per year, plus postage for any competition entries.

“We have all levels of photographers in our group,” said Sutton. “From the very beginning people who, say, use a point and shoot camera and just want to learn a little more about it, to professional photographers who are doing it for money.”

Sutton and Loudon both stressed how the club is a good way to network, meet people and make friends in the community.

“I grew up in Creston, and then I lived in Cedar Rapids for 34 years. Then, I got flooded out,” Loudon said. “My dad was ill at the time, and I was driving back and forth, so, I decided to move back to Creston. So, I wanted to meet some people. … I was looking for something I was interested in that I could get to know people that were interested in the same things I was.”

Creston: Arts will host the photography club’s art at the restored Creston Depot during October. This is the second time the club’s photography will be displayed.
