Spartans secure road sweep

OTTUMWA — Southwestern picked up its second victory of the season over Division I community college Indian Hills in a road sweep Tuesday, 25-21, 25-15, 25-20.

The Spartans improved to 15-7 overall, while dropping Indian Hills to 12-15.

“We played some great volleyball tonight against a good Indian Hills team,” said SWCC coach Melissa Blessington. “We served aggressive and also played some great defense tonight. We had some long rallies and we were able to win those rallies. That is showing that this team is getting better every match.”

Mel Mangrum led a balanced net attack with eight kills and seven blocks. Ashley Strong served 21-of-22 with five aces and Alex Duffy was perfect in 14 serves wit a pair of aces.

The Spartans hit the road again today, facing Northeast Nebraska at Norfolk, before returning home Friday in a 6:30 p.m. match against Ellsworth.

Attacks (kills) — Mel Mangrum 8, Jenna Casey 7, Shelby Sullivan 7, Allyson Kocour 6.

Setting (assists) — Cassidy Yong 28.

Digs — Molly Schimp 22, C. Yong 12, Ashley Strong 11, Janaya Fox 11.

Serving — Strong 21-22 (5), Alex Duffy 14-14 (2).

Blocks — Mangrum 7, Kocour 2, Shelby Sullivan 2.
