Why the delay?

Remember the old saying, “What you don’t know won’t hurt you?” Maybe it will and maybe it won’t, but wouldn’t you like to know so you would be the one to decide for yourself and your loved ones?

On July 29, the Union County Board of Supervisors was notified of a manure spill east of Creston. When the hog confinement filed its construction permit, it promised to knife in the manure the same day it was spread. The manure was not knifed in the same day it was spread.

On Aug. 2, the Union County Board of Supervisors was notified that the manure applicator that spread the manure was not certified.

Why the delay of approximately two months and no word from our supervisors? We are told because of the Iowa Legislature’s laws and governor’s signature of such laws the supervisors can’t help us stop the large confinements and feedlots in our neighborhoods. Does that mean they should keep secret public notices of spills?
