COUNCIL BLUFFS — Southwestern’s five-match winning streak came to a halt Tuesday against the nation’s No. 9-ranked Division I community college team.

Southwestern, a Division II team entering the match with a 17-7 mark, came up short in three straight sets on the Reivers’ court, 25-13, 25-13, 24-21. The win pushed Iowa Western’s record to 22-3 for the season.

“Iowa Western is a tough team,” SWCC coach Melissa Blessington said. “I’m glad to see some fight in the third game. This just means we have room for improvement.”

Alex Duffy led Southwestern with six digs. Molly Schimp was busy defensively with 14 digs.

The Spartans return to Council Bluffs Friday to participate in the 2013 Reiver Festival, taking on Iowa Central at 1 p.m. and Iowa Lakes at 5 p.m.
