NEW HARTFORD (MCT) — Authorities are investigating a report of an attempted abduction in New Hartford over the weekend.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, an 8-year-old girl told her parents she was near City Hall around 2 p.m. Saturday when she was approached by a black van with lots of windows.

The driver, an older man with gray beard and mustache, farmer’s hat and smoking, told the girl there was a family emergency. He told her to get in the van so he could take her to her mother.

The girl instead ran off and went to a hair salon where here mother was, and her parents called authorities.

The sheriff’s office said area schools have been notified of the incident.
