Bluegrass tourney

MURRAY — Class 1A 10th-ranked Murray set a school record for victories with a pair of wins in the quarterfinals of the Bluegrass Conference Tournament Tuesday night.

Murray swept Mouton-Udell 25-12, 25-13 and Twin Cedars 25-10, 25-20. Twin Cedars also defeated Moulton Udell, 25-11, 25-15.

Murray improved to 23-2 for the season, surpassing the previous record of of the 2003 team (22-6). The Mustangs move on to Thursday’s semifinals in Humeston against Melcher-Dallas at approximately 6:45 p.m. after Grandvew Park Baptist meets Lamoni at 5:30. The winners meet at approximately 7:45 p.m.

On the way to reaching the semifinals, Grandview Park Baptist defeated Orient-Macksburg 25-6, 25-9. No other O-M scores or Diagonal scores were available at press time.

In Tuesday’s competition, Hannah Barber had 20 kills and received serve at 14-15 for Murray. Megan Oswald smacked 14 kills. Cheyanne Ashby hit six kills. Kate Patton had 35 assists and served 19-20 with five aces. Madison Gonseth was 15-18 with five aces.

Chellsea Jones had six digs and Jade Lecy had five blocks.

POI quarterfinals

Mount Ayr fell to 14th-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys 25-23, 25-12 during the Pride of Iowa quarterfinals Monday night. Kelcie Shields had five kills and two blocks, Macy Larsen served 7-7 with four assists and Paige Daughton had 10 digs while serving 7-7 with an ace.

The Raiderettes beat Central Decatur 2-1. Daughton had seven kills and 13 digs. Leah Klejch had two blocks, Larsen finished with eight setting assists, Allie Shields served 15-15 and Tessa Shields served 6-8 with two aces.

Also in the quarterfinal round, Southwest Valley beat Southeast Warren 2-0. Sydney Maynes had 12 kills and Marie Palmer added 11. Caitlyn Damewood had 17 setting assists and served 11-12 with an ace. Sierra Sleep had a team-high 14 digs.

In the Timberwolves’ 2-0 win over Lenox, Palmer had 11 kills, Damewood totaled 11 setting assists, Sleep contributed seven digs and Mikayla Dolch was 9-9 serving with four aces.
