CORNING — The Corning Opera House Cultural Center will present the play "The Boys Next Door" by Tom Griffin Nov. 1-3 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and a Sunday afternoon matinee at 2 p.m.

The storyline takes place in an apartment complex in New England, where four mentally-handicapped men, Arnold, Lucien, Barry and Norman, live under the supervision of a firm but “burned out” social worker named Jack (Andrew Bardole).

Norman (Jeff DeYoung) works in a doughnut shop, can’t resist the sweet treats and takes tremendous pride in his keys. Lucien P. Smith (Jim Heaton) has the mind of a 5 year old, but imagines he is a great reader. The insecure ringleader Arnold (Burton Heaton) is the hyperactive, compulsive chatterer, and, while Barry (Scott Hite) is a brilliant schizophrenic, he is also devastated by the rejection of his brutal father and fantasizes he is a golf pro.

Scenes are mingled with the “little things” of daily life, that become momentous and oftentimes funny, interspersed with moments of great poignancy, that remind the audience, everyone wants to love, laugh and find meaning in their time on earth. Some scenes use adult language.

Other cast members are Mr. Hedges (Liam Ray), Mrs. Warren (Lisa Allison), Sheila (Deena Moore) and Mr. Klemper (Brian Peterson). The play is directed by Jeff DeYoung, assistant director is Beth Waddle, producer is De Heaton, and the sound/lighting technician is Andrew Heaton.

Tickets at the door are $12 for adults and $8 for students, or purchase in advance at $10 for adults and $6 for students. Advance tickets may be purchased from cast members, State Bank of Brooks, or Corning Chamber in the Lauvstad Building or by calling the opera house at 641-418-8037.

The play is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.
