From Ron Dunphy
Often it is said, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” Rearing a youngster is the responsibility of parents; families are essential and our school system is part of the overall development process. Churches play an important role, as do friends.
The Creston Community School District (CCSD) is blessed with many volunteers who put in literally thousands of hours helping when they can in advancing opportunity in a big selection of activities for all students of all ages.
I am writing today to acquaint readers of the newspaper with the chance to enhance instruction of all second grade students in reading. For many years, volunteers have helped with R.E.A.D.S. at the elementary school. More volunteers are needed this year.
Beginning in early November, you, a friend or a relative can sit with a child, listen to them read and maybe read to them, as needed. This then is an invitation to a rewarding, ongoing, weekly event that will capture and challenge your heart. The reward is the satisfaction of providing the service of encouraging and expanding learning. I have found the excitement of the children something that is its own reward.
If you respond to the smile of a child this is for YOU!
