It looks like we are finally getting into the real fall weather this week. The trees are at the height of their glory. The colors are looking really nice and this weekend should be a good time to drive around southwest Iowa and take in all the splendor. The amount of ducks and geese flying around seems to be higher than usual.
The harvest is also in full swing, and I always like to stop and watch a field or two being picked. The mountain of corn is starting to grow at the local co-op. Get out and take a look around — nature is working overtime right now. As I look out the window right now, snow showers are making their first appearance of the year.
A week from today all the little goblins will be out trick or treating. If the extended forecast is any indication, it may be a nice Halloween this year. The forecast I read is calling for temps in the mid-50s during the day and cooling off toward the evening.
Bright Eyes, the annual fundraiser and good time for kids in the park, is this Saturday. The good time is at McKinley Park and always attracts a lot of kids and businesses to the event. It’s a good way to spend a few hours with your little goblins.
Don’t forget to get your flu shot. It is that time of year where the “creeping crud” starts to rear its ugly head. At least if you get a flu shot, you might have a good chance of missing out on the fun.
The end of the fall sports season is getting close. This weekend is the end of the football regular season and volleyball is also getting near the state playoffs. Several of the area high school teams look to make the playoffs. Also, cross country and swimming regionals are about to take place.
I think I have eaten about 100 apples over the past month. The apples this year sure are good. The wet and cool spring got the apples off to a good start. Some of the apples I have bought at the orchard in Nebraska City are just “humongous.” Some of the honeycrisp apples I purchased are about the size of grapefruits. Plus, they are just super sweet this year. Remember “an apple a day...keeps the doctor away.”
This Monday is the Creston News Advertiser’s Holiday to Holiday event out at the SWCC gym. The fall event has more than 30 booths brought to you by local merchants. It will also give you many ideas for the coming holiday season. Plus, a number of the booths have goodies to sample — always a plus. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door, and it is an entertaining evening. Lots of door prizes will be given away, too.
Thought for the week: “Ladies and gentlemen, I have a grave announcement to make. Incredible as it may seem, strange beings who landed in New Jersey tonight are the vanguard of an invading army from Mars.” — Orson Welles, Halloween 1938. Many took the message seriously and panicked.
