Murray 3, Lamoni 2

MURRAY — The Murray Mustangs survived a scare from upset-minded Lamoni here Tuesday in a Class 1A regional opener, winning 3-2.

Murray came from behind to pick up the 23-25, 25-12, 17-25, 25-18, 15-11 win over Lamoni.

“A very hard fought battle in front of a nice crowd saw the Lady Mustangs pull one out after being down 2-1,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said. “Our play at the net was big tonight, as we had 26 blocks.”

Jade Lecy led the Mustangs with 12 blocks, while Megan Oswald contributed eight and Madison Gonseth had four.

Hannah Barber finished with a team-high 23 kills, followed by Oswald’s 14 and Cheyanne Ashby’s seven. Kate Patton set 49 assists.

Murray advances to take on Southeast Warren at home on Tuesday in the regional quarterfinal.

ORIENT — Orient-Macksburg knocked off Clarinda Academy in straight sets, 25-6, 25-11, 25-5 here on Tuesday, advancing to the regional quarterfinals where the Bulldogs will take on East Union.

Shyla Waldhauser served 15-of-17 with eight aces to lead the Bulldogs. Courtney Neal served 7-of-7 with four aces and Amber Rinke served 16-of-17 with four aces. Harper Spurrier finished the night 9-of-9 with three aces.

As a team, the Bulldogs served 25 aces on 70-of-74 serving. Lexi Dunmire went 6-of-6 and Shannon Eads was 17-of-18.

Eads also finished with two kills for Orient-Macksburg.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday against East Union with play starting at 7 p.m. in Lenox in the regional quarterfinals.
