MARSHALLTOWN — Southwestern Community College picked up yet another three-set sweep here Wednesday against Marshalltown Community College, improving to 28-9 for the season and 7-2 in ICCAC play.

The Tigers dropped to 18-17 overall and 3-6 in the ICCAC. Southwestern sits just one game behind co-leaders Kirkwood and DMACC in the conference standings.

Southwestern cruised to a 25-16 win in game one, battled back for a 25-19 win in game two and won a back-and-forth game three 27-25 to finish off the sweep.

“This was a very scrappy Marshalltown team,” Southwestern head coach Melissa Blessington said. “Our girls knew going out that they had to stay on their toes, because it was going to be a lot of balls coming back at us. We did a good job fighting each play, and I’m happy to come out of there in three sets.”

Marshalltown took a 16-15 lead on Southwestern in game two, but the Spartans scored five straight points to take a 20-16 lead en route to the 25-19 win.

Southwestern then held a 17-14 lead in game three, but Marshalltown fought back to take a 22-21 lead before Southwestern closed out the victory with the 27-25 win.

Alex Duffy led a balanced attack at the net for the Spartans, finishing with 13 kills. Janaya Fox added 11 and Shelby Sullivan had nine kills.

Cassidy Yong set 41 assists and Molly Schimp played a good defensive match with 21 digs.
