GREENFIELD — Des Moines Christian knocked Southwest Valley out of postseason play with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 sweep here Friday night in Class 2A regional semifinal action.
Des Moines Christian (28-9) meets Eddyville-Blakesburg in the regional final Wednesday at Pella Christian. Southwest Valley bows out at 21-10.
“I thought the girls played well,” said SW Valley coach Lindsay Wetzel. “We just made some unforced, mental mistakes at critical points in the match. Des Moines Christian had a very big, good middle hitter that got quite a few blocks on us. And they had a good outside hitter. We didn’t do a great job getting some touches on her hits.”
Junior Brynn Reichardt had 16 kills and three ace serves for the Lions, and sophomore Ebby Prewitt added 10. Erika Veurink had seven total blocks.
Marie Palmer led Southwest Valley with 13 kills and three solo blocks. Sydney Maines had seven kills and three blocks.
The Timberwolves kept fighting, rallying from a 9-3 deficit in set three to tie it 12-12.
Wetzel said the first season of Southwest Valley athletics was a smooth transition for the merger of Corning and Villisca schools.
“These girls have a lot to be proud of,” Wetzel said.
