Dorothy May, 94, of Greenfield died Nov. 1, 2013, at Greenfield Manor.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Steen Funeral Home, 101 S.E. Fourth St., Greenfield. Mary O’Riley will officiate. Interment will be in Greenfield Cemetery. Open visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Hebron Methodist Church and/or Care Initiatives Hospice. Dorothy Marie May, daughter of Erma Grace (MacQuillen) and James Blaine Donnellan, was born May 19, 1919, near Bridgewater in Adair County.
Dorothy lived in the Greenfield and Adair County area all of her life.
Dorothy’s family moved to Greenfield when she was young.
Dorothy graduated from Greenfield High School in 1938.
On March 23, 1941, Dorothy married Paul May at the Greenfield Methodist parsonage.
Dorothy was a homemaker and farm wife. She sewed bridal accessories for approximately 10 years in her home. Dorothy also began working as a cook at Greenfield Manor in 1989 and retired in 1999.
After Paul's death Jan. 2, 1992, Dorothy left the farm and moved to Greenfield.
Dorothy was a member of Hebron Church for more than 60 years and active in UMW. She also belonged to knitting club and several neighborhood card clubs.
Dorothy is survived by her children, James (Lois) May of Greenfield, Patricia Donovan of Maysville, Mo., Janet (Steve) Mellinger of Creston and Daniel May of Greenfield; grandchildren, Sandi Jungweber (friend Chris Becker), Clint (Tracy) May, Traci (Mike) Hornback, Michelle (Kevin) Caperton, Denise (Bert) Shelman, Arika (Jeff) Brindley, Brent (Kim) Mellinger, Darcy Mellinger (friend Chris Stolk), Kevin (Andrea) Mellinger, Renee (Brady) Harbin and Michelle Swanson (friend Bob Harr); 20 great-grandchildren, sister Phyllis Piper of State Center; sisters-in-law, Norma Donnellan of Greenfield and Pat Donnellan of Santa Cruz, Calif.; lifelong friend Doris Corey of Greenfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harold, Robert and Howard Donnellan; sisters, Cornelia Sullivan and June Richards; and son-in-law Taylor Donovan.
