Lee Eugene Strickland, age 81, of Stanton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at his home after an extended illness.
Lee was born June 8, 1932, five miles east of Essex, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Helen (Lundstedt) Strickland.
He started Kindergarten at Goldenrod School. His parents moved to the Cramer Chapel area in Douglas Township, Page County and Lee graduated from 8th grade from Pleasant Valley School in Scott Township of Montgomery County. He graduated from Stanton High School in 1950 and was inducted into the Army in August of 1952.
Lee served 18 months in Korea where he earned the Bronze Star. He also spent three years in the Army Reserve.
Lee was united in marriage to LaVern Rossander on October 6, 1954. They lived in Red Oak for two years and moved to their farm north of Stanton in 1956.
Lee was involved in the landscape nursery business for many years and was a salesman for Marshall Nurseries for 13 years before starting his own business, Woodland Nursery and Landscaping.
Lee was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stanton where he taught Sunday school for over 20 years and served on the Trustee Board. He was a longtime member of the Stanton Chamber of Commerce, serving a term as President. He was elected to the Montgomery County Fair Board in 1971 serving as Vice-President, President, and Secretary. During his term as President, the arena and the gold auditorium building, of which he was very instrumental in designing, were added. Lee also served as Vice-President of the 5th District of Iowa Fairs. Lee was inducted into the Montgomery County Fair Board Hall of fame in 1994 and in 2012, along with his wife, LaVern, was inducted into the Iowa State 4 H Hall of Fame. Lee was always involved with fair activities and spent several years as a 4 H leader. Lee’s family was so important to him and he found great joy in attending all of his grandchildren’s activities throughout the years. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Fred and Dick; and son-in-law: Rudy Kilgore.
Survivors include his wife: LaVern Strickland of Stanton, IA; son: Lyle Strickland and wife Julie of Stanton; daughter: Linda Kilgore Landers and husband Mick of Creston, IA; grandchildren: Jackie Hoyt and husband Keegun of Red Oak, IA; Ethan Strickland and fiancé Melissa Spencer of Red Oak; and Collin Strickland of Pella, IA; step-grandchildren: Dustin Kilgore of Creston; Amber Landers of Ames, IA; Jessica Landers of Kansas City, MO; and Ben Landers of Lamoni, IA; great grandchildren: Max and Morgan Kilgore of Creston; brother-in-law: Leonard Rossander and wife Lorene of Stanton; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Gold Auditorium Building with Pastor Matt King officiating. Burial will be in the Mission Covenant Cemetery near Stanton, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 4-6 PM Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Evangelical Covenant Church or the Montgomery County Fair Board.
