Mildred Shields

Mildred Shields, 94, of Des Moines, formerly of Creston, died Nov. 7, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Creston. The Rev. Gideon Gallo and the Rev. Tom Woodin will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Ed Shields will officiate the committal. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. A memorial fund has been established for Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation. Online condolences may be left at www.watsonarmstrongfh.com.

Mildred Shields, daughter of Mary Ellen (Wolfe) and Glenn David Robinson, was born April 3, 1919, in Mount Ayr.

Mildred graduated from Kellerton High School and furthered her education at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.

Mildred taught for a short time in country schools.

In 1939, Mildred married Lyndell G. “Chubb” Shields.

Both Lyndell and Mildred were inducted as members of the Iowa Saddle Horse Association. Mildred and Lyndell served as directors of I.S.H.A. Board, and Mildred also served more than 20 years as secretary of the statewide association.

Mildred and Lyndell moved to Creston in 1972, where she was active at the United Methodist Church and U.M.W.

Lyndell died in 1991.

Mildred moved to Des Moines in 2008.

Mildred is survived by her sons, Robert Lynn (Carol) Shields of Newburg, Ind., William Lee Shields of Sioux Falls, S.D., James Crawford (Lanell) Shields of Estero, Fla., John David (Chris) Shields of Keokuk and Thomas Raymond (Yolanda) Shields of Des Moines; grandchildren, Randy, Mike, Scott, John, Sarah, Todd, Michael, Melissa, Matthew and Jessica; and great-grandchildren, Hanah, Issay, Sam, Ryder, Violet, Lucy, Mary, Lana, Chrissy and Brandon.

In addition to her husband, Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and sister Mary Marie Bronson.
