ORANGE CITY — The Southwestern men rallied in the second half to earn their second victory in a row.

After trailing 28-27 at halftime, the Spartans (2-2) controlled much of the second half in a 69-63 victory over Northwestern College junior varsity Saturday.

“After halftime we grabbed the lead and got it up to 12 points with about 11 minutes to play,” said Spartan coach Mike Holmes. “They made another run on us and led 49-48 on a 3-pointer with about five minutes left.”

Nick Lenhard then made two big plays in succession by aggressive defense in the passing lanes that put the Spartans in transition situations. Elliott Hamdeed followed that up with a basket for a five-point Spartan cushion.

“Down the stretch we made some stops and hit free throws,” said Holmes, whose team sank 18 of 30 free throws to 8-of-13 for Northwestern.

Mataika Koyamainavure, 6-6 freshman from Fiji, led the Spartans with 17 points and six rebounds. He also handed out a team-high four assists. Tanner Kellogg chipped in 11 points and five rebounds. Hamdeed finished with 10 points and three steals.

While the Spartans were outrebounded 30-22, they had better ball security with nine turnovers while forcing 21 Northwestern turnovers.

“We were very patient on the offensive end,” Holmes said. “Northwestern always comes out and shoots it well. I thought we were contesting pretty well, but they were still 7-of-14 from the arc.”
