It seems like Christmas is sneaking up at a fast clip this year. The late Thanksgiving holiday has made Christmas seem like it is right around the corner.
The snow this past weekend has gotten a lot of people in the mood for the holiday. My wife is even singing Christmas carols! I know a lot of teachers are doing the countdown to winter vacation.
It looks like most school districts will have two weeks off for the holiday.
There are some good looking Christmas lights around town. A quick drive around town will give you several neat displays.
It must be a Duck Dynasty Christmas at a number of the stores. About half the stores I walk into seem to have some item with one of the Duck Dynasty members on it. I can’t believe everything that has a Duck Dynasty theme to it. You can buy everything from wine to a Christmas record done by the cast. I would say beards are in this Christmas.
The Hawkeyes and Huskers both got bowl bids to Florida this year. Iowa State fans will take this year off from bowl games and get ready for next year.
Iowa will be in Tampa at the Outback Bowl and Nebraska will be in Jacksonville at the Gator Bowl. Both teams are underdogs, but both should have a good chance for an upset.
It will be interesting to see if either fan base will make a good showing at the games. The warm weather would be nice ... but watching from the comfort of your couch saves you a lot of money. Just turn up the thermostat to 75 or 80 degrees at game time!
In the spirit
The annual Christmas Basket Fund is in full swing. Any contributions you would like to make would be greatly appreciated. The baskets will be distributed Dec. 21
The CNA is also taking up a collection of items for the local animal shelters. If you have an item, please bring it to the Creston News Advertiser office (503 W. Adams St.). We have a nice tree you can place it under.
A contribution of any size is appreciated — big or small, it all helps.
The true start of winter is not until Dec. 21. I’m guessing the last couple of weeks was just a “warm up” for the real thing! The electric bill I received the other day said this year it is 10 degrees cooler than at the same time last year.
The local deer hunters will be out in full force again this weekend. The temps should be a bit warmer for the hunters. Most of the hunters I have talked to have had good success so far. If the number of dead deer along Highway 34 is any indication, it should be a good year for hunters.
There is a free kids movie this weekend at The Strand theatre in Creston. There is also a free kids movie over in Osceola at 10 a.m. this Saturday morning. So, if you have some kids looking for some free entertainment (plus a little shopping time for mom and dad) take in a show.
The annual Creston News Advertiser scrap event will be held Jan. 18 and 19 at the Supertel Convention Center. Forms will be in the paper next week and available at the newspaper front counter. It’s always a good time.
Thought for the week: “May your stuffing be tasty and your turkey be plump. May your potatoes and gravy have nary a lump. May your yams be delicious and your pies take the prize. May your Christmas dinner stay off your thighs.” — Unknown
