The Creston seventh-grade girls defeated Winterset Thursday, 37-29, in its closest contest of the season to date.

Brielle Baker had 11 points, eight steals and five rebounds for Creston (4-0). Megan Haley had nine points and Keisa Stewart added eight points. Taylor Buxton collected a team-high 15 rebounds along with six steals.

Creston led 12-8 and 24-16 after the first two periods.

“It wasn’t our cleanest offensive game by any means,” Creston coach Larry Peterson said, “but I thought we did the things we talked about on defense. Most impressive was the post defense by Megan Haley on their 6-foot-2 center. She fronted her and denied the entry passes, allowing only two points by that player in the second half after a 12-point first half.”

Creston held off Winterset 24-23 in the second game. It was tight all the way, tied 12-12 at halftime with an 18-17 lead entering the final period. Jesse Vicker’s nine points led Creston. Devon Buls had a team-high eight rebounds and six points.

“What a great experience for that group, to learn how to finish a close game and be successful,” Peterson said.

Creston concludes the pre-holiday portion of its schedule Tuesday at Shenandoah.
