Spartans close out 2013 with loss to Division I Reivers

The Southwestern women faced a tall task — literally — in completing their pre-holiday schedule Saturday at home against Division I Iowa Western Community College.

The Division II Spartans fell 83-43 to the 13-1 Reivers. Southwestern slips to 2-10.

Southwestern competed during the first half, trailing 36-22 at the break. But the Reivers outscored the Spartans 47-21 over the final 20 minutes.

Abigail Asoro, 6-foot sophomore from Sweden signed to play next year at West Virginia, led the Reivers with 21 points.

“For about the first 10 minutes, we were playing well enough to hang around,” said SWCC coach Addae Houston. “Then you could start to see their talent was starting to take over.”

Still, there were positives for Southwestern, including 18 points by post player Darian Polson and a good overall effort by Jill Vanderhoof. The freshman from Villisca finished with a team-high seven rebounds, three steals and three assists along with four points.

“We did a lot of good things,” Houston said. “Competing against that type of team with their size, it was one of our best rebounding games. It makes me wonder why we can’t compete like that on the boards against the teams in our league. We have to get consistent with that.”

The Spartans get their first chance at that with a league game Jan. 4 at Southeastern.
