The end of the year is upon us

Another year down in record time.

I guess the older you get, the faster the years go. I’m not sure that having Christmas and New Year’s Eve in the middle of a week is a good thing. It sure makes it harder for people to navigate the holiday — kind of the stop and start theory.

You work a day or two and you get a day or two off. Hump day (Wednesday) really is a hump day. It should make the Christmas to New Years time period go fast.

Speaking of old, the Creston News Advertiser will be 135 years old in 2014 — one of the longest continuing businesses in Union County. Sometime during the year we will stop and celebrate the event.

I’m not sure who we would get to blow out the 135 candles on the cake. I’m sure it would take more wind than I could generate.

Next week we will run our year-end review of 2013. We try to cover the top stories from around the area. It will be interesting to revisit 2013. It went so fast and I can barely remember what happened at the beginning of this year.

The year sets up kind of nice with some of the holidays coming at just the right time.

First of all Valentine’s Day is on a Friday, which is a good deal for folks who like to take their valentine out for dinner. The Fourth of July is also on a Friday, which will give people a long weekend for the Fourth.

Christmas will be on a Thursday — which will give plenty of people a chance to have a four-day weekend by taking the Friday after Christmas off.

Thanksgiving is also late again next year with the event coming on the 27th of November, so it will be a short shopping season leading up to Christmas again next year.

There sure are a lot of geese flying around this winter. The local goose hunters are having a tough time calling them in. I had a chance to take in a little hunting last week and even champion goose-caller Dick Johnston couldn’t get the “darn geese” to hit his wonderful “fowl water hole.” Thank goodness there are still three weeks of goose season left.

Bowl games

Between now and Jan. 6, you will have 27 bowl games to watch, if you get into that much football. My guess is that Florida State sneaks by Auburn to win the whole thing. I look for Iowa to give LSU a good game and may even beat the SEC team given a good day.

I get the feeling Nebraska fans may be in for a long day against Georgia. Using your third-string quarterback is never a good thing.

Christmas Basket

A big thank you to all the folks who contributed to the fund this year. It goes a long way to helping out folks in Union County, not only during the Christmas season, but throughout the year. Also a big “thanks” to all the folks who helped to deliver the baskets last Saturday. Thank you to all for your generosity.

The annual Creston News Advertising scrap booking event will be Jan. 18-19 at the Supertel Inn here in Creston. If you like to scrapbook you can pick up a form here at the newspaper office or see the newspaper for additional information.
