Two Panthers in ‘Stampede’ top eight

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Freshman Chase Shiltz and senior Trevor Frain secured top-eight finishes in one of the nation’s top high school wrestling tournaments Saturday.

Shiltz finished seventh at 145 pounds and Frain was eighth at 170. As a team, the Panthers scored 180 points to finish 29th among 39 teams. Through Friday’s action, Creston/O-M was 18th, but lost some second-day scoring punch with three injuries leading to a series of forfeits.

Gavin Leith (152 pounds) suffered a separated shoulder, Kruz Adamson (113) sustained a concussion in a win by (slam) disqualification Friday and Tayler Pettit was unable to continue Saturday with a severe ankle sprain.

5 in top 16

The Panthers had a total of five wrestlers in the round of 16 gold bracket. Adam Baker finished 11th at 182 pounds, while Pettit and Leith were each 16th. Although they didn’t place in the top 16, Spencer Wray and Joey Huntington each won three matches.

The Kansas City Stampede is a two-day tournament at Hale Arena at the American Royal Center.

Oklahoma teams dominated the top 10, but Archer High School of Lawrenceville, Ga., claimed the championship with 557.5 points. The rest of the top 10 was Stillwater, Okla., Tuttle, Okla., Bettendorf (Iowa), Edmond (Okla.) North, Collinsville, Okla., Perry, Okla., Timberland, Mo., and Sand Springs, Okla.

This year’s tournament consisted of 39 teams from 12 states. It was ranked the No. 8 high school tournament by themat.com. There were 27 returning All-American wrestlers in the field, along with 46 reigning high school individual and 16 team champions.

Shiltz’s finish was similar to Jake Marlin’s freshman year in the event, Panther coach Darrell Frain said, referring to the four-time state champion now on the University of Iowa wrestling team.

Shiltz went 3-1 in his pool, winning by two falls and a bye before losing a 5-3 decision. In the championship bracket he was derailed by Bettendorf’s Logan Ryan, the nation’s 16th-ranked wrestler who has committed to Iowa. The final score was 7-5 as Ryan controlled the early action, and Shiltz closed strong with a late takedown.

“Chase stayed in it against a highly-ranked national kid,” Frain said. “I felt pretty good about how he was doing. His loss in the consolation was a clash in styles. The kid slowed us down a little bit.”

Shiltz rebounded to win his match for seventh by fall in 2:14.

Trevor Frain placed fifth a year ago and had higher hopes as a senior. He seemed on track with a dominating start, winning his first four matches by first-period falls.

Frain started the championship bracket Saturday with another pin, and then lost 7-0 to Nathan Marek of Southmoore High School of Moore, Okla., who has been ranked 13th at 182 pounds nationally.

“He’s legit,” coach Frain said. “He’s committed to Oklahoma. It was 0-0 most of the first period before he got a late takedown on us.”

For a moment, it appeared Frain would match Shiltz with a seventh-place finish. Wrestling Nick Hollins of Omaha Skutt, who Frain beat 1-0 last year, the Panther senior took Hollins to his back off the initial takedown.

“The kid did a high bridge and rolled through and pinned us,” Frain said. “I know he felt he was good enough to finish in the top four, but it just didn’t work out.”

Baker shines

Frain was excited about Baker’s 5-3 tournament at 182. He won his pool with four straight wins, then lost a 3-0 decision in the championship bracket to Eric Quador of Staley, Mo. He went 2-2 in consolation matches, taking the 11th-place match by fall in 1:12 against Joseph Hutchison of Collins Hill, Ga.

“Baker had a great tournament,” Frain said. “I was impressed with how he was winning the good, close matches against good people. It was a loaded weight class. The No. 1 kid is going to Penn State, the No. 3 kid is going to Illinois, and another one is going to Oklahoma. Adam competed really hard in that division.”

He praised Wray and Huntington for going 3-3 in tough brackets and barely falling short of the gold (top 16) bracket. Likewise, in a 2-3 tournament, Seth Maitlen was leading in all three of his losses before losing by fall at 195. And, freshman Kadon Hulett went 2-3 at 220, winning a 15-14 decision in a wild consolation match to close out the tournament.

(Hulett and several others were unable to wrestle their final consolation placing match as tournament officials attempted to hurry through the tournament because of the impending severe weather. Frain said the trip home took 4 1/2 hours through freezing rain and snow.)

Also, new Panther heavyweight Jake Gutschenritter won two matches to provide six team points.

Now, Frain said it’s a matter of building on the experience of the weekend and balancing the injury issues in time for an important upcoming week.

“When we come back we have Lewis Central and Kuemper (at Carroll) on Tuesday (Jan. 7) and Harlan (Jan. 9) at home on Thursday, before our tournament,” Frain said. “We’ll just have to try to get ready and see how it goes with everyone.”
