Six area wrestlers crowned POI champions

BEDFORD — Three Bedford/Lenox wrestlers claimed Pride of Iowa Conference championships here on Saturday, leading the way to a third place finish at the conference tournament.

Central Decatur claimed the team title with 193 points, followed by Southeast Warren in second with 173. Bedford/Lenox scored 161 team points for third.

Mount Ayr took fifth place with 106 team points, while Southwest Valley finished sixth with 94. Nodaway Valley was seventh with 54 points and East Union eighth with 42.

Mount Ayr received individual championships from Erik Freed and Joe Ricker, while Southwest Valley’s Kallan Schmelzer also claimed an individual title.

Bedford/Lenox controlled the lower weights, winning individual championships at 106 pounds, 113 pounds and 120 pounds.

Colby Lange won a 3-0 decision over Interstate 35’s Nathan Phillips to win the 106-pound championship.

Jared Hensley then won a 6-3 decision over returning state qualifier Austin Pontier of Interstate 35 to win the 113-pound title. Dusten Reed pinned Southeast Warren’s Jonathon Hardy in 1:15 in the 120 final.

Mount Ayr’s Freed took the 138 title with a pin in 1:47 over Pleasantville’s Sawyer Phillips.

Southwest Valley’s Schmelzer won a 9-6 decision over Central Decatur’s Colton Ranney for the 160-pound title.

Mount Ayr junior Ricker won the 285-pound championship by injury default over Central Decatur’s Austin Blades.
